So here’s the easiest way to remember the difference:

But it’s easy to see how the misconception could develop.

“That layer in my lawn is called thatch.”

They realize they have too much of it.

So they naturally say:

“I need to thatch my lawn.”

It sounds completely reasonable.

There’s just one problem.

Thatching traditionally means applying thatch. Dethatching means removing it.
